FREEDOM'S SQUARE | « Indietro

Freedom Square
Szabadság Tér

Budapest’s Freedom Square represents one of the most charming areas in the capital.
The square, which was once was a barracks, was but was destroyed in the late 19th and early 20th century. In 1848 and 1849, many Hungarian Freedom Fighter’s died here, hence the name, Freedom Square.
Known as Szabadság tér to the Hungarians, Freedom Square is situated on the site of what was an old barracks. In 1848 and 1849, many Hungarian Freedom Fighter’s died here, hence the name, Freedom Square.
In the center of the square you will find the only remaining monument (the Obelisk) associated to the Soviets. This tall obelisk is very large and there is a giant star on the top of it. This is a symbol of the troops who set Budapest free in World War II.

Along with the obelisk, there are many other charming buildings to see: these buildings include Ignác Alpár’s Exchange building,Hungarian National Bank,US Embassy Building.
And so much charme and history surround this great square.

U.S. Embassy (Chancery Building)
Directly behind the Soviet monument stands U.S. Embassy Building, completed in 1900 and housing U.S. diplomats since 1935. This building was first the home of the Hungarian Hall of Commerce and was designed by architects Aladár Kármán and Gyula Ullman. The Swiss flag flew over this Viennese-style building during World War II and it is said that its lower floors were occupied by Jewish refugees in hiding.

Hungarian National Bank (Magyar Nemzeti Bank)
Two buildings at the Freedom Square were designed by renowned Hungarian architect, Ignác Alpár and the building includes elegant limestone on the first level, depicting various aspects of money, commerce and trade in the years of the early 20th century.

Stock Exchange Building
Ignác Alpár's other building, located at the square's western side is the former Stock Exchange building. Now the headquarters for Hungarian National TV, the building is clearly influenced by the Secessionist style. This is particularly noticeable at the building's impressive entrance.
