GELLERT HILL | « Indietro

Gellért Hill
Gellért Hegy

Rising majestically above the Danube River, Gellert Hill offers tourists a panoramic view of the city of Budapest.
Gellert Hill sits about140 meters above sea level and is named for Bishop Gellert (Gerald), known for his mission to spread Christianity throughout Hungary. After the death of Saint Stephen, the first Christian king of Hungary, legend has it that the rebelling insurgent pagan Magyars sealed Gellert up in a barrel and hurled him down the side of the hill.

The Citadel
The Citadel is situated at the top of Gellert Hill and it is a structure built by the Austrian Habsburgs between 1850 and 1854 in order to control the city after the suppression of the Hungarian War of Independence. This fortress was originally about 200m long with walls about 6m high and up to 3m thick.
When it went up in 1854, the Citadella was the most despised structure in the city. The Austrians built this fortress on Gellért Hill to keep Budapest under their thumb and prevent a repeat of the 1848 Revolution. When the imperial army withdrew from the fortress, the Hungarians made symbolic breaks in the walls to show that the building was no longer a threat. Rising above the Citadella is the 14m-tall Liberation Monument. The inscription, which once paid tribute to the Soviet Red Army, has been historically sanitised for your protection: it now honours those who laid down their lives for 'Hungary's prosperity'
Today, the old barracks have been converted to a tourist hotel and the structure mostly serves as a place from which guests can enjoy views of the city and the pretty Danube River below.

Liberation Monument
The Liberation Monument (the work of Zsigmond Kisfaludi Strobl) was erected in 1947 to commemorate the liberation of the country and in honour of the soldiers of the liberating Soviet Army ( today we call it occupation ). The female figure holding the palm of victory together with the pedestal is 40 metres (132 ft.) high. In front of it is the statue of a Soviet soldier; of the two accessory figures one vanquishes the symbolic figure of destruction and devastation, the other one raises high the torch of progress. The names of fallen Soviet soldiers are carved on the pedestal.

Cave Church
Located on Gellert Hill overlooking Liberty Bridge (Szabadsaq Hid) in Budapest the Cave Church is a unique grotto chapel cared for by the Hungarian Paulite order of monks. Closed during the Communist years, it has since been reopened and offers a peaceful respite from the noise of the city.
The Cave Chapel's small interior with natural rock walls and various niches is uniquely atmospheric and peaceful. The acoustics of the cave make for a memorable experience when music is played during a service. There are fine views of Liberty Bridge and across the river to Pest from outside the chapel, where a statue of St. Istvan stands.
